Reading 0-12-0 Type Locomotives

Class Pennsylvania (Locobase 5959)

Data from Gustav Reder (1974), pl. 177.

Built as a helper by James Milholland to handle trains up the Falls Grade which traversed the ridge between the Schuykill and Delaware Rivers near Philadelphia. A great hulking beast with a camelback-style cab perched on the boiler, this first-of-a-kind twelve-coupled had no tender and no bunkerage. The huge, wide firebox was stoked at the beginning of the slog up the grade and that sufficed.

The lightly built freight cars of the time couldn't handle the high drawbar pull and the locomotive was converted to a more orthodox banker in 1870.
