Central Railroad of New Jersey Camelback Locomotives

The Jersey Central received ten "heavy" 2-8-2s from the USRA. These were delivered, and retained their bituminous burning 70.8 square foot grates, which, of course, were deep to allow for soft coal. Then the CNJ followed up with 75 more 2-8-2s, identical to the first ten, except for one major detail: the new ones had a 95 square foot shallow wootten firebox. Since, obviously, these locomotives were stoker-fired, this was not a problem for the fireman. However, it would seem that almost from their installation, these locomotives were burning a mixture of anthracite and bituminous, and ultimately, entirely burning bituminous.
