Reading 2-8-8-2 "Chesapeake" Type Locomotives

Class N1-sa (Locobase 326)

Data from RDG 11 - 1926 Locomotive Diagram book supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive collection.

31 built for the Reading from 1917 to 1919. Firebox heating surface included 90 sq ft of arch tubes and syphons. Even with the enormous grate, these engines were still short of breath.

The class was broken up in the late 1920s when 11 engines were converted to K-1sa and K-1sc Santa Fe-type 2-10-2s. All of the remaining engines were rebuilt as simple-expansion articulateds with 4 cylinders of equal size; tractive effort became 111,400 lb. The first 4 engines to be rebuilt --1811, 1816, 1818, and 1821-- were converted by 1936 with the rest completed by 1945.
