Monongahela 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Type Locomotives

Class H5 (Locobase 7062)

Data from MNGHLA 12 - 1949 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive collection.

One diagram notes that those H5s fitted with thermic syphons add 50 sq ft to the firebox heating surface. That is the version shown in the specs, which also show 12 fewer boiler tubes as a result. Engine 119 was fitted with a superheater that contributed 570 sq ft to the total heating surface of 2 ,905 sq ft. To house the 30 5 3/8" superheater flues, the boiler lost 167 2" tubes. See H5SA (Locobase 7063) for the as-built superheated version of this class.

Class H5SA (Locobase 7063)

Data from MNGHLA 12 - 1949 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive collection.

Twelve of these superheated Consolidations came from the Pittsburgh Locomotive Works (builder's numbers 55834-55839 and 58658-58663); Porter supplied the 13th (its number 6848).
