As noted in several other Locobase entries, 857 2-10-0s were built by Baldwin and Alco (Richmond and Schenectady Works) for the Russian Government (see Locobase 381 for a full description). The NOT & M's decks came second-hand from a variety of earlier owners including the St Louis & Hannibal (which had an 85-mile line from Hannibal to Gilmore), the Marion & Eastern (an Indiana shortline), and the Southern Railway.
At least 5 of these were fitted with Nicholson thermic syphons (Locobase believes this was after they entered NOT & M service) which added 56 sq ft to the firebox heating surface. Two others were shown in the next diagram to have had 194 sq ft of firebox heating surface and a total evaporative heating surface of 2,590 sq ft.
