Buried Steam Locomotive in Cincinnati
June 2008
A Pre-Civil War engine (builder and details unknown) was buried in a tunnel
collapse in the 1800s. It was used as a construction engine for a line
running west out of Cincinnati, Ohio that was never completed. The CEO
of a prominent Cincinnati company (now deceased) claims to have seen it
fifty years ago (a pile of rust with a few brass parts) but it has since
been buried again. Three railfans rented a backhoe a few years back and
made an attempt to find it but were unsuccessful. Apartment houses are now
over the old tunnel which may by now be completely caved in. The location
is along I-74 near downtown Cincinnati.
