Fredrikshamn 2-6-2 Locomotives in Finland

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1/E2 (Locobase 5616)

Data from Markku Karvonen's personal.inet.fi/koti/markku.karvonen/prk/vanha3.htm (visited 29 March 2003); and Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 22, p. 16;. and Baldwin Record of Recent Construction, No 14 (Philadelphia: Burnham, Williams and Company, 1901), pp. 114-115. Works numbers were 16471-16472 in

Adhesion weight in the Baldwin specification, which estimated "about 44,000 lb." and engine weight 68,343 lb. The weights shown in the Locobase specs come from Baldwin's Record of Recent Construction, although the overshoot seems significantly beyond usual outcomes.

The animator's railroad website -- [] (2 April 2003) -- says that these Prairie tanks -- BLW works # 16471-2 -- were privately owned and ran on the Hamina-Inkeroninen line. (Karvonen's Finnish-language description appears to say that the Valtionrautatiet Suomi took the line and locomotives over in 1916.)

The photo shows a very balanced profile with the steam dome sitting over the second driven axle and sand domes over the first and third driver sets. The vestibule cab is slightly outsized and the stack, surprisingly, is a straight, tall pipe. Like many other Finnish locomotives, this class's pilot doubles as a snow plow.
