Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg Mij. 0-6-0 Locomotives in Netherlands

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Bello / NS 7700 (Locobase 13188)

Data from De Nederlandse Museummaterieel Database, located at [], last accessed 23 September 2011.

The DMD site explains that this design was supplied to several Dutch cities to operate on their tramways and other light local passenger lines. They were based on an earlier HSM design, but were bigger to permit speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph).

Holland's Werkspoor delivered the first 18, which were followed by 12 from Henschel & Sohn, 9 more from Werkspoor, and 5 from Schwartzkopff. They were nicknamed "Haarlemmermeertjes" or "Bello".

Museumstoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik (SHM) notes that 7742 at least was equipped not with the usual warning whistle, but with a bell that rang. (North American locomotives ring a separate bell when they approach a station platform.)

NB: Driver diameter is estimated based on reported tractive effort.
