New Zealand Government 2-6-2 Locomotives in New_Zealand

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class N / 351 (Locobase 10775)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works, Record of Recent Construction ((1903), No. 31, p. 23-24; and DeGolyer, Volume 24, p. 19. Works numbers were 19270-19273 in July 1901.

This was a small quartet of Prairies for the NZGR, the last four of a group of twelve that included six delivered to the NZGR in 1885 (Locobase 4959) and two to the Wellington & Manatau (Locobase 4965). Like the others, the 1901 engines had to negotiate curves of 7 1/2 chains (495 feet) radius and bogies had take siding curves of 5 chains (330 feet). This batch came with piston valves.

They enjoyed only a relatively short career, being scrapped in March 1927 (all but 352). 352 lingered more than two years longer before being withdrawn in August 1929.
