RENFE 2-10-2 Locomotives in Spain

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 151-3101 (Locobase 2456)

[] (28 April 2003) has the diagrama with all dimensions and weights. Works numbers were 574-578 in 1943, 579-588 in 1944, 589-592 in 1945, and 593, 616-617 in 1946.

Among the biggest locomotives to operate in Europe, these were delivered by the Barcelona works of Maquinista Terrestre Y Maritima in 1943. The boiler and firebox had heating surfaces identical to those of the 4-8-4 that entered service fourteen years later (Locobase 1130). Equipped with the Walschaert-driven oscillating cam gear and a Krauss truck that combined the first two driving axles.

Tonnage rating was 2,300 tons up a 1/2% grade at 12 mph. On a 2 1/2% grade they could pull 600 tons. In Lineas Del Tren (#290, 5 May 2003) [Por que llegaron a Espana las 1-4-1 Mikados francesas? reproduced on [], accessed 7 Dec 2005], Angel Maestro credits this class with 1,200 tons over a relatively easy profile between Venta de Banos and Valladolid.
