East Jordan & Southern 2-6-0 "Mogul" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 4 (Locobase 12670)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines, 1903, as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 26, p. 218. Works number was 21862 in March 1903.

The EJ & S's short (and obviously lightly built) line operated 19.2 miles of line (28.2 miles of track) between East Jordan and Bellaire, Mich where it connected to the Pere Marquette. This Mogul was bigger than the one they would buy a few months later and was more versatile as a result. Thus it worked the common-carrier service until its retirement in July 1930. The 4 was scrapped in July 1937.

The EJ & S remained in service until 1961 working freight (including iron products fromt he East Jordan Iron Works) and passenger trains.

Class 5 (Locobase 11510)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 26, p. 218. Works number was 23631 in January 1904.

As noted in Locobase 12670, the EJ & S was built to serve Michigan timber harvesting. When the logging operations that had prompted its construction to begin with played out in the 1920s, the EJ & S sold this little wood-burning Mogul to the Wisconsin Land & Lumber Company.

Class 7 (Locobase 14121)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 43, p.215. See also Locobase 12670 for a brief description of the EJ&S. Works number was 39026 in January 1913.

The 7 was a slightly enlarged version of the 1903 Mogul (#4) shown in Locobase 12670. When the EJ&S's logging business played out, they sold the 7 to the Antrim Iron Company.
