Duluth & Northern Minnesota 2-8-2 "Mikado" Locomotives of the USA

The Duluth & Northern Minnesota was a logging railroad based in Knife River, MN. The railroad was no longer viable in 1919 and it was abandoned. Among the steam locomotive it owned was a Baldwin-built 2-8-2, which was its number 14. The locomotive was bought by and used on the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad. Number 14 was brought to Minnesota and was restored in 1992 to run excursions on the North Shore Scenic Railroad. It was withdrawn from service in October 1998 and is now in storage serviceable at the Lake Superior Transportation Museum in Duluth, MN.

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 48, p. 235. Baldwin works numbers were 39664-39665 in April 1913.

These Mikados were the newest iron (well, mostly steel) on the D&NM and had many years left on the meter when the D&NM was sold in 1921. Both went over to the Lake Superior & Ishpeming as their 15, 14 in class Mk-1. In March 1959, the 14 was sold to the Inland Steel Company.
