Central Railroad of New Jersey Mikados

The USRA assigned ten USRA "Mikado-Heavy" locomotives to the Central Railroad of New Jersey. They arrived from the American Locomotive Company in 1918. These locomotives set the specifications for the balance of the 2-8-2s that the CNJ would buy. A total of 86 "Mikados" would be added to the roster between 1918 and 1925.

CNJ experimented with a tender booster on one of their locomotives, but it was removed quickly. Lima built 5 large 21,000 gallon tenders in the 1930s that was used on most of the Mikes as necessary. Tender swapping was a common occurance on the CNJ.

CNJ sold four of its USRA Mikes (855, 857, 858, 859) to the Pittsburgh and West Virginia in 1945 (P&WV used them until 1953) and retired the other six in 1947. The rest of the non-USRA Mikados were retired between 1947 and 1955.

There are no surviving Central Railroad of New Jersey 2-8-2 "Mikado" type locomotives.
