Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Mikados

The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, a relatively small railroad, had some very interesting designs. They had purchased 62 Mikados with 63-inch drivers and a respectable 60,300 lbs starting tractive effort as early as 1912. Between 1922 and 1924, the DL&W purchased what may be described as fatter versions of the USRA heavy. While the drivers, cylinders and boiler pressure were the same on the DL&W engines as the C&O K3, and the tractive effort the same, including the trailer booster, the boiler was the same as the 27 x 32 USRA design. However, since this class was used primarily in helper and mine run service, the fact that it was under-boilered may not have been too significant.

There are no surviving DL&W 2-8-2 "Mikado" type locomotives.
