New York, New Haven & Hartford Mikados

In 1916, the New York, New Haven & Hartford received two groups of “Mikados” from the American Locomotive Company. The first group consisted of 25 locomotives that were designated as Class J-1 and assigned road numbers 3000-3024. These locomotives had 63” drivers, 25” x 30”cylinders, a 180 psi boiler pressure and they exerted 45,535 pounds of tractive effort. The last two, numbers 3023-3024, were built with McClellon boilers and water tube fireboxes. The Class J-1s were built with a maximum height of 13’-9” unusually low for a main line locomotive, but were built to go under the bridges on the Dorchester Branch.

The second group delivered in 1916, consisted of five 2-8-2 locomotives of a more normal size. This group was designated as Class J-2 and was given road numbers 3100-3104. They had 63” drivers, 26” x 32” cylinders, a 200 psi boiler pressure and they exerted 58,372 pounds of tractive effort. These locomotives were built without a mechanical stoker and the fireman could not shovel enough coal for these locomotives to be used for mail line service, so they were assigned to yard duty or used as helpers.

In 1923, when the Central New England was absorbed by the NYNH&H three more Class J-2 were added to the roster. They were built in 1916 and were identical to numbers 3100-3104.

There are no surviving NYNH&H 2-8-2 “Mikado” type locomotives.
