Spokane, Portland & Seattle Mikados Mikados

The Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway was owned jointly by the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern and was never permitted to build steam locomotives of its own design. Instead, it received most of its motive power used, as hand-me-downs from its parents, or as add-ons to one of its parents’ orders. The SP&S operated 26 “Mikados” all used. Eleven came from the NP and the others arrived from the GN. The first to arrive were numbers 500-502 from the GN and number 525 from the NP. These four locomotives were added to the SP&S roster in 1925. Over the next 25 years the other 22 arrived, with numbers 550 and 551 coming last in 1950.

There is one surviving NP 2-8-2 “Mikado” type locomotive. It is number 1762, which was transferred to the SP&S and served on that railroad as number 539. This locomotive was retired from the SP&S and is currently being restored by “Steam Team 539” at Fairgrounds Park in Battle Ground, WA.
