Yreka Western Mikados
In April 1915 Baldwin built and delivered a Mikado to the Caddo River
Lumber Company which owned the Caddo and Choctaw Railroad of Rosboro,
Arkansas who numbered it 4 and named it "R. L. Rowan". She was converted
to oil either just before or after being sold to the Cia de Real del Monte
y Pachuca Railroad as their number 105. This railroad was owned by United
Melting, Smelting, and Refining Company. It was sold to the McCloud River
Railroad in January 1923 and it arrived on the property in May. The McLoud
River Railroad already had one 2-8-2 which it bought new from Baldwin in
1914 and and carried the number 18. The newly acquired locomotive was a
close twin to number 18 and therefor was given road number 19. The nearly
identical sisters served on the McCloud River Railroad in a roster of
similar sized 2-8-2 and 2-6-2 locomotives until bumped from service by
new Baldwin diesels. On June 8th of 1953, surplus after twenty-nine years
of service, the #19 was sold to the Yreka Western. She has been serving
there ever since except a short period where she was leased to the Oregon
Pacific and Eastern out of Cottage Grove, Oregon.
