Quebec, Montreal & Southern 2-6-0 "Mogul" Type Locomotives

Class C-1-I (Locobase 6645)

Data from 1913 QM & S locomotive diagram book supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive collection.

When these Moguls were delivered, the railway they went to was known as the Great Eastern Railway. At the time of the diagram book, there were 5 (works #740, 743, 748, 780, 781). The latter two operated at 150 psi, developing a commensurate increase in tractive effort and achieving 17,709 lb.

The GER had built a line between Dundee and Levis in Quebec, opening it in 1882. In 1899, according to the website http://www.rosshorwood.com/RailSiteLinksFiles/QuebecMontrealSouthern.html (visited) 2 July 2005), the GER was acquired by the South Shore which shortly became the Quebec Southern.

The QM & S was the name given to the QS when the Delaware & Hudson Railroad bought it in 1906. The D & H had realized that if they bought this rail line and the Napierville Junction Railway, they'd have a direct route between New York and Montreal. Much paper moved between the Canadian forests and the upper New York State paper mills and the railroad moved anthracite coal to Canadian markets.

In the 20s, the D & H began closing lines and losing interest in the QM & S. By 1929, the American company sold the railway to the Canadian National.
