Central of Georgia 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" Type Locomotives

Class J-1 (Locobase 462)

Described in Railway Age Gazette of 20 March 1926.

Central of Georgia added two Nicholson Thermic Syphons of 88 sq ft and three arch tubes of 27 sq ft to the basic USRA heavy Santa Fe design; this resulted in a huge firebox heating surface. Cole-formula cylinder horsepower rating of 3,082. Drury (1993) comments that these engines "were much better suited to CofG's Birmingham route than the Mallets [2-6-6-2] and could be used on other lines as well."
