These ten-wheelers must have been among the first locomotives purchased after the D & H bought the Quebec Southern and renamed it the QM & S (see Locobase 6645). There were 7 D-3s (works #43702-08), but these two (43703 and 43708) were the only ones with 72" drivers; see Locobase 6647 for the 63" version.
The design's most obvious feature is the capacious Wootten firebox for burning culm, although MLW fitted a conventional cab on the boiler. By the time the Canadian National had bought the QM & S in 1929, 3 of the 7 had been retired. The others were designated H-2a and renumbered 1202-1205. They were withdrawn within two years.

There were 8 D-3s (works #43702-09) including the one that went to the Napierville Junction (#43709); see Locobase 6646 for the two that ran on 72" drivers. Alco's works numbers for the 63"-ers ran 43702, 43704-43707.
