Kansas City Southern Texas Type Locomotives

The Kansas City Southern Railroad ran from Kansas City, 786 miles south, to Port Arthur, TX on the Gulf Coast. In need of new motive power in the late 1930s KCS turned to the Lima Locomotive Company and purchased ten "Texas" type locomotives in 1937.

Five of them (road numbers 900 through 904) were oil burners and the other five (road numbers 905 through 909) burned coal. These Class J locomotives had 27" dia. x 34" stroke cylinders, 70" dia. drivers, a 310 psi boiler pressure and a tractive effort of 93,300 lbs. The oil burners weighed 509,000 lbs and the coal burners weighed 514,000 lbs.

All ten of the 2-10-4s were retired in 1952 - 1953 and were scrapped by the mid 1950s.
