Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class SS5 (Locobase 3706)

Data provided by Carlos Alberto Fern+ndez Priotti in Bryan Attewell ([link] Steam Locomotive simulator program (April 2000); and FCCA Locomotive Diagram supplied on Facebook at [link], last accessed 17 June 2024. North British Locomotive Company works numbers were 23744-23771, 20816-20817 in 1928 (road # 550-579). Robert Stephenson & Company works numbers were 4036-4051 in 1930 and 4052-4055 in 1931 (road # 580-599).

These radial tanks used the C25 boiler design firsr installed on the S.4 0-6-0T (Locobase 3705) in 2013. But they were delivered in the late 1920s with a superheater and a trailing truck. Locobase hasn't identified the manufacturer of the superheater, but its elements lay in larger-than-usual flues. The cylinders received steam through 8" (203 mm) piston valves.

Described in the diagarm as shunting engines, SS5s roamed over much of the FCCA's territory where some served for more than 50 years.
