Entre Rios 2-6-0 Locomotives in Argentina

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class unknown (Locobase 15859)

Data from R Herbert La Page, "On Compound Locomotives", Railway Engineer, Vol X, No 3 (March 1889), pp. 67-79.

Herbert wrote that this engine was one of six Moguls sent out to the Entre Rios and the only one to use the von Borries-Worsdell cross-compound system then coming into vogue. The key feature in the design was the automatic intercepting valve that allowed live steam into the LP cylinder for starting and used the exhaust steam to close that valve once the locomotive began moving.

(Locobase cannot confirm that the other five used two 16" x 24" cylinders.)

Herbert's long article goes into considerable detail about the advantages of compounding and, given its relatively early publication, is a valuable look at the burgeoning stud of two-cylinder compounds in several countries.
