Entre Rios 2-8-0 Locomotives in Argentina

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 501 (Locobase 12906)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 28, p.203. Works numbers were 27212-27216 in January 1906 and 34103 in December 1912.

By the time the Entre Rios bought these Consolidation from Baldwin, its ownership had long since changed from the indigenous Central Entrerriano to a British-financed company. From the 379 miles owned by the government in 1892, the FCER had taken over the Primer Entrerriano's Gualeguay Central to Puerto Riaz and opened the Villaguay to Concordia branch. Total mileage topped 700 miles and would grow still more.

A sixth 2-8-0 would arrive in 1910. This one contained a Baldwin smokebox superheater that was credited with 204 sq ft of superheater surface. In fact, the apparatus did not add much heat to the steam and was nothing like as efficient as the Schmidt flue-based system.
