Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 25/1451 (Locobase 10980)

Data from DeGolyer, Volume 27, p.183 and Volume 28, p. 185 and Record of Recent Construction #54 (Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1905), p. 10-11. Works numbers were 24994-24996 in January 1905; 27049, 27056 in December.

This quintet was built for the same service as the North British engines shown in Locobase 3664. The Baldwins were slightly larger and had a little more heating surface, but they shared the same simple lines and Belpaire firebox. Baldwin's specification required the locomotive to haul 300 long tons (336 short tons) up a 1/1% ruling grade at 16 kph (10 mph). (Curve radii were never tighter than 1,000 meters)

Inside-admission, balanced piston valves measured 10" (254 mm) in diameter. Valve gear was controlled by a Belpaire lever and screw reverser.
