Unspecified 4-6-2 Locomotives in Argentina

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class "E Ramos Mejias" (Locobase 20189)

Data from "Catalogue No. 10036--Locomotives for Export", American Locomotive Company (New York City: American Locomotive Company (April 1910)., pp. 17-19, 23-26.

Alco's illustration shows a locomotive with "American Locomotive Company" on the tender and "E. Ramos Mejia" under the cab window. The locomotive's name almost certainly refers to Eziquiel Ramos Mejia, minister of public works under successive administrations from 1906-1913. In an absolute sense, no 4-6-2 should roll on 54" drivers, but on the metre gauge, the wheel diameter/gauge ratio of 1.37:1 typically coincided with passenger service.

The only Alco production Pacifics shown with 19 x 26 cylinders and 54" drivers were four for the Rio Grande do Sol in 1920. After further investigation, Locobase arrives at the following: the illustration on catalogue page 26 represents an available design on display, not an actual order. Naming it for the minister of public works aided publicity, perhaps, but no locomotive ever seems to have borne that name.
