Queensland Government Rlys 0-6-2 Locomotives in Australia

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class F / 6D13 (Locobase 9438)

Data from Mike Quirk, [link], last accessed 10 May 2008.

When the Queensland Land & Coal Company began building a private colliery railway to Torbanlea, they ordered 2 radial tanks from the Glasgow builder (works #2826-2827). But the QLCC quickly found the line too expensive to build . So they sold the locomotives and some rolling stock to the QR, which built its own siding to the mines.

Quirk notes that the powerful tanks proved unsteady at any kind of speed and although their counterbalances were later amended, the QR used them for switching work. Even with the shortcomings and an 1898 boiler explosion suffered by 72, the two engines carried on until 1926.
