New South Wales 2-6-2 Locomotives in Australia

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class I-17/Z26 (Locobase 2407)

Data from John Forsythe (Archive Officer, Transport House), Steam Locomotive Data, Public Transport Commission of NSW [New South Wales], July 1974, p. 75, archived at [link], last accessed 12 March 2015. (Many thanks to Brett Fitzpatrick for his 11 March 2015 email supplying the link to the CoalsToNewcastle website.) See also [link] (16 May 2003) for full description.

Used for banking (i.e., as a helper engine on a steep grade) and shunting (yard switching). Dimensions very similar to earlier 2-6-0s, but this class had a saddle tank for the water, which concentrated weight on the drivers.
