Cairns Mulgrave Tramway 4-6-0 Locomotives in Australia

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 5 (Locobase 13266)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 31, p.187. See also Dave Elsmore, "Queensland. Cairns Mulgrave Tramway" archived at [link], last accessed 15 October 2011. Works number was 32678 in February 1908.

Elsmore tells us that this railway was an example of a common carrier that was built by the district board (a predecessor to the shire council) instead of the state authorities. Lightly (Elsmore says "cheaply") built, the 31-mile line had "low-level bridges and a minimum of earthworks."It was a demand-stop line "...only stopping on signal to taken on passengers or parcels, with the passengers wishing to alight giving notice to the guard at the previous station."
