These bi-directional tank engines were designed to haul lightweight fast trains and had a rated top speed of 100 kmh (62 mph). But the class usually served local branch-line requirements, which accounts for the doubtless affectionate nickname that translates as "village idiot".

The design's unusual profile apparently was designed to resemble a diesel engine. Its slender boiler flanked by large water tanks and its domes were screened by upright panels. Above the running gear, which were clearly rod driven, all the lines were boxy from most angles. Behind the cab, a large compartment held the coal and a baggage section. Cylinders were supplied with steam through Lentz poppet valves.

The German Anschluss of 1938 resulted in the incorporation of the twenty being inducted into the DRG as BauReihe 71.5. After successful trials in Slovakia, six other slightly larger M. 273 class locomotives were delivered to the Czechoslovak CSD in 1940; see Locobase 1640.

The BR 71.5's wartime duties included shunting (switching) and industrial work. Of the 18 that were returned to Austria in 1945, a few were retained as OeBB 3071 et seq and the last of these was retired in 1968.

One engine survives as the property of Eisenbahnmuseum Strasshof and was restored to operating condition in 1993.
