Austrian Federal Railways 4-6-4 Locomotives in Austria

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 729 (Locobase 2471)

Data from H. le Fleming (in Ransome-Wallis, 1959).

Tank locomotive of compact design, but surprisingly good riding qualities. Le Flemming attributed this smoothness to positioning of the bogie pivot centers inside of the center line (i.e., toward the drivers from each end). In the front the offset was 4 3/4", in the rear 2". The first 10, delivered in 1931-1932, had a firebox heating surface of 12 sq m. (129.17 sq ft). The last six had the larger firebox area shown in the specs - this represented the addition of Nicholson thermic syphons.

A listing of all locomotives taken into the Deutsche Reichsbahn shown on [link] (first viewed 26 February 2004) shows that the DRG took all 16 built as BR 79 601-616.
