JO&S Articulated Locomotives in Austria

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Krassova (Locobase 11156)

Data from "Locomotive Engines at the Paris Exhibition", The Artizan (Vol II, 4th Series, #2), p. 25.

Locobase 683 describes the Engerth-Fink variation of the semi-articulated Engerth locomotive. The article referenced above noted that after the initial trials with the system, the engine was refashioned with a set of 3 coupled axles before the firebox and 2 behind, connected by a pivot joint. A similar joint connected the rear of the locomotive to the tender.

The reporter noted that the demands of the line on which these locomotives operated were considerable. The rails weighed only 48 lb/yd (24 kg/m), rose on an incline of 1 in 50 (2%), and curved as tightly as 360 ft radius. In fair weather, the report added, the engine could pull 120 tons. Locobase notes the small size of the grate.

Wikipedia's entry on the Engerth system notes that one of the four locomotives (these 3 and the Steyerdorf) lasted long enough to be given a class ID by the Hungarian State Railways and numbered 4270.
