Bridgetown & Saint Andrews Bay 2-6-0 Locomotives in Barbados

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Catherine (Locobase 12304)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 21, p. 297. Works numbers were 16269-16270 in October 1898. See also Bajan Tour Girl's blog on the railway at [link]

See Locobase 12303 for a description of this railway and the first two engines produced for its 2' 6" version. The 3rd and 4th locomotives -- Catherine and Dorothy -- were originally ordered as all-adhesion engines, but had a front truck added before they were delivered. The addition was prompted by both the installation of a copper firebox (vs steel) and a brake while still trying to hold the axle loading to 5 tons.

Although the fireboxes were different in area, the boiler had the same number of tubes and the same diameter. Each tube in these two was more than 5 feet shorter than the 2-8-2T tubes, however.
