Belgian State Railways 2-6-0 Locomotives in Belgium

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Type 16 (Locobase 10089)

Data from "Recent Belgian Locomotives," The Locomotive & Railway Carriage & Wagon Review, Vol III (May 1898), p. 70.

Locobase is surprised by the size of the grate in these passenger engines; the firebox was probably a Belpaire type. They were designed to handle Brussels to Arlon (Luxembourg) expresses over steep grades and thus were considerably more powerful than earlier engines. Their heavy plate frames reduce the apparent size of the drivers, leading to the conclusion that the locomotive could have done with one more axle.
