Arica-La Paz 2-6-2 Locomotives in Bolivia

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1 (Locobase 15187)

Data from DeGolyer, Volume 66, pp. 376. See also W L Schurz, Bolivia: A Commercial and Industrial Handbook, Special Agents Series, Issue 208 (Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1921), p. 60. Works number was 51870 in June 1919.

This tank engine was headed for the Tarera-Corocoro branch of the ALP, which ran for only 8 km (5 miles).

The rectangular side tanks were to "taper to front end to allow engineer to see track." As was true on most rural railways, the main lines had relatively tight curves, bending to radii as tight as 80 metres (262 feet). Sidings and switchers had curve radii half as generous (40 metres/131 feet).

Some time after its service entry, the 1 was taken into the Empresa Nacional de Ferrocarriles Boliviano and renumbered 104.
