Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Rio Novo (Locobase 11862)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 13, p. 169. Works number was 8278 in December 1886.

This sizable tank worked for a 306-km (170-mile) railway in the Piaui state of Brazil near Rio de Janiero. It was tasked to haul 130 gross tons up 2 1/2% grades.

The J deF&P merged with the nearby Rio Novo in 1888, the same year that the Leopoldina bought the J deF&P to gain access to the eponymous nexus. At that point, this little tank was renumbered 54.
