Rio Doce 2-6-2 Locomotives in Brazil

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Alfonso Penna (Locobase 12099)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 19, p. 72 Works number was 13904 in January 1894.

Clearly intended to reduce axle loadings, the Alfonso Penna was unusual in deploying 5 axles to support such a small boiler on the metre gauge. Its specification included a requirement to scale 3% grades.

Later operated by Central do Brasil as #16.
