Sudoeste da Bahia 2-8-0 Locomotives in Brazil

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 28 (Locobase 15441)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 79, p.226. Works numbers were 59695-59696 in November 1926.

Following close behind the tender couplings of the three small Pacifics bought for this Bahia State railway (Locobase 15439) came a pair of wood-burning Consolidations. Though smaller, the locomotives put more weight on their drivers, which brought the factor of adhesion closer to an acceptable level. Like the other Baldwins bought for this line in 1926 (see also Locobase 15440), these 2-8-0s were superheated and used 8" (203 mm) piston valves to admit steam to the cylinders. They also scaled 3% grades and negotiated curve radii of 328 feet (100 metres) while rolling on 21 kg/metre (42.33 lb/yard) rail.

They later operated on the Nazareth, which was owned by the Sudoeste do Bahia.
