Class 161 (Locobase 21133)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Negative 12,593, Class 2-8-2 19 S 137 supplied in March 2023 in an email from Teemu Koivumaki. Works numbers were 70039-70056 in 1943 and 72660--72668 in 1946.

Covering their bets, this Brazilian narrow-gauge road made sure to have the Eddystone builder include grate components with one set suitable for wood burning and the other for coal burning. When carrying wood, the tender could hold 3.3 cords.

This large buy supported the newly created metre-gauge Rio Doce Railway, which began operation in 1942 when it absorbed the more venerable Vitoria de Minas. Rapid growth in the iron ore traffic originating at Itabria in Minas Gerais State and the port of Vitoria in Espito Santo State.

The first eighteen engines appear to have both filled the bill of particulars for the Rio Doce and shown the need for even more power.
