Dona Tereza Cristina 2-8-2 Locomotives in Brazil

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 153 (Locobase 21121)

Data from Alco class 282 S182 Order S-1837 builder's card supplied in February 2023 by Teemu Koivumaki. Works numbers were 69445-69449 in September 1941.

Two striking features of these meter-gauge Mikados were the large grates and fireboxes. The latter's heating surface area included 39.5 sq ft (3.67 sq m) of thermic syphons to offer one of the very highest areas for the gauge. Even when adding 2-8-2s running on the slightly wider "Cape" gauge (3 ft 6 in/1,067 mm), the 153s remained near the top of the list.

Heavy grades challenged the class, limiting trailing load to nine loaded wagons. Even so, much of the class operated into the 1980s.
