Sao Paulo Northern 2-8-2 Locomotives in Brazil

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 32 (Locobase 15127)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Vol 66 pp. 273+. Works numbers were 53093-53095 in April 1920.

This trio of Mikados had 8" (203 mm) piston valves. The specs insisted the locomotive was "to be very flexible. " The company had wanted these Mikes to have an 11-foot wheelbase, but accepted the extra 6 inches "providing same flexibility is retained."

Baldwin's efforts weren't quite satisfactory according to a "Hereafter" note referring to a 10 August 1922 letter detailing criticisms and suggesting changes. Some other Hereafter observations referred to crank collars and side rods that needed strengthening.

They were later operated by the Araraquara Railway, where they were renumbered 303-305.
