Oeste de Minas 4-6-0 Locomotives in Brazil

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 128 (Locobase 6707)

Data from DeGolyer, Volume 66, pp. 246+ and [link] . Works numbers were 54055-54064 in November 1920.

This decade of relatively small wood-burning Consolidations

Class 128 (Locobase 15119)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Vol 66, pp. 247+. Works numbers were 54055-54064 in November 1920.

The numerous Ten-wheelers in service on the O de M that rolled on 43" drivers (Locobases 13250 and 15112) were produced for freight operations. A year after the last of these was produced, the Oeste de Minas ordered these ten wood-burning passenger engines, which had 16" cylinders and more boiler capacity.

They all later were renumbered for the Viacao Ferrea Centro Oeste

Class 19 (Locobase 13250)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 34, p. 354; Vol 44, pp. . Works numbers were 34216-34219 in January 1910, 35817-35820 in January 1911, 36978-36979 in September, and 37710-37711 in April 1912, 38012-38015 in July..

The first four of this Ten-wheeler class preceded those of an identical design built for the Dourado (Locobase 13009) and first produced in June 1910. They were tasked with negotiating 3% grades and curves of 100 metres (328 ft) or 11 1/2 degrees. The Minas bought batches from Baldwin in 1910-1912 and this class had the largest number of members of any design on the railway.

Locobase 15112 describes the slightly later duplicates that arrived in 1914 and 1919. These had higher-pressure boilers, but were otherwise repeats.

19 was later sold to the Viacao Ferrea Centro Oeste and the 20 to the Rede Mineira Viacao. Their consecutive renumbering (205-206) suggests that the two railways were operated in the same system.

Class 39 (Locobase 13251)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 44, p 45. Works numbers were 37082-37084 in October 1911, 38010-38011, 38050-38051 in July 1912.

Based on the metre-gauge 4-4-0s delivered in 1908 (Locobase 13248), this trio straddled a narrower gauge. Other than the inclusion of a third driven axle, the design was essentially identical. It was a satisfactory choice as four more were produced in

All wound up on the Rede Meneira Viacao in the reorganization of 1931.

Class 39 (Locobase 15112)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Vol 54, pp. 251+, Vol 66, pp. 240+. Works numbers were 41302-41305 in April 1914 and 52231, 52260 in August 1919, 52358 in September.

The O de M had bought a large clutch of Ten-wheelers from Baldwin in the early 'teens (Locobase 13250). They obviously liked the dimensions of the design for they came back to Eddystone two years after the 1912 batches. Starting with the 39, the boiler pressure was now set to 180 psi (12.4 bar).

Class 49 (Locobase 13255)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines, 1888, as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 49, pp. 151-152 and Vol 66, pp. 240+. Works numbers were 40871-40873 in November 1913 and 52360-52361 in September 1919.

Locobase 11634 shows the original set of Ten-wheelers built to this design and delivered to the Minas in 1889. 24 years later, the railway returned to Baldwin for another three engines. The new locomotives retained the wood-burning firebox and the relatively low boiler pressure. But they were significantly heavier and now used Walschaert's outside constant-lead radial valve gear. (Even so, there was an emphatically stated adhesion and overall engine weight limits.) The stack was to have "a copper top finish". These bi-fuel engines were delivered with "one set of netting for burning wood and one set of grates (plain bars and dead plate) for each engine."

Remarkably, the O de M ordered another pair six years later built to the same specs, including the low boiler pressure.

They remained in service until at least 1955.

Class Manoel Barboza (Locobase 11634)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines, 1888, as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 15, p. 128. Works numbers were 10138-10139 in July 1889.

Of all the dozens of locomotives supplied by Baldwin to the Oeste de Minas, only these two were Ten-wheelers. Although it was prosperous for a while after its opening, the O de M hit heavy weather in 1894 and really never recovered. When it was liquidated in 1903, the railroad had amassed 930 route-km.

In 1931, the O de M was absorbed by the Rede Minera de Viacao and the 4-6-0s were renumbered 35-36.
