Data from Lionel Wiener, writing in Cassier's Magazine - an engineering monthly (Vol XXXVIII, #5, October 1910), p 470 and "Locomotives for Brazil", National Car and Locomotive Builder, Volume 25, No 11 (November 1894), pp. 178-179; and "Two Types of Locomotives for Brazil", Volume 68, No 11 (November 1894), pp. 508-509. See also D[ennis] Rock Carling, 4-8-0 Tender Locomotives (New York: Drake Publishers, Inc, 1972), p. 81 and serial 253 on table XIII [13], pp.106-107. Works numbers were 2445-2454 (November 1894) and 2492-2496 (December 1894).

Builder info from B.Rumary, 25 Kingscombe, Gurney Slade, Radstock, BA3 4TH, ENGLAND and Jeremy Lambert as supplied by Allen Stanley in March 2004.

The NC&LB says this design was one of two -- a total of 60 locomotives -- delivered to the Central. The Rumary-Lambert listing shows that there were four distinct types: the 15 broad-gauge 4-8-0s with Belpaire fireboxes, 15 metre-gauge 4-8-0s (works #2465-2474, 2486-2490/road #23-33, 47-50), 25 broad-gauge 2-6-6T (see Locobase 2887 for details of the 2-6-6T), and 5 metre-gauge 4-4-0s (works #2514-2518/road #34-38).

The AERJ account noted that the Brazilian Mastodons were "somewhat more highly finished than American locomoties of the present day ...[with] has a considerable quantity of brasswork and bright paint. Sand box, dome, steam chests, and cylinders all were enclosed in brass casings. Boiler bands, headlight stand edges, running board edges all were of brass as were two bands on the stack and handrails. Everything else was green with gold leaf stripes.

The design's size and power demanded two firemen and the footplate and cab roof were sized to accommodate them. Relatively low-profile domes on the boiler allowed passage through several tunnels.
