Class 279 (Locobase 5662)

[link] (viewed 18 July 2003). A very early set of locomotives for Bulgaria, the 10 shipped soon became nine when 287 was scrapped for "technical defects", according to Simeon Trifonov. The Russe-Varna line was bought by the Bulgarian government in 1888 and these locomotives were renumbered 142-150. They were rated at 73 tons up 2.5% at 28 km/h (17.4 mph). The class was scrapped by 1914, although 148 was saved for museum service and film appearances.
