Wikipedia notes that Henschel's production of the BDZ provided the power and reliability that the railway had been seeking. As wartime demands on Henschel suddenly increased, plans to mass-produce the design were curtailed at ten in addition to the two prototypes.
Originally designed as pure coal burners, the class was converted in 1958 to a mixed fuel oil-coal fuel system that "improved steam production and facilitated service, particularly in mountainous areas."
