Burma Railways 2-8-2 Locomotives in Burma

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class IRS/YD (Locobase 8578)

Data from [link], a reprint of the Vulcan magazine for Winter 1949, which describes Vulcan's delivery of 44 of these Mikados. They were part of a series of designs created in the mid-1920s to meet Indian railway requirements. This is the metere-gauge goods locomotive. Of this particular order, 20 went into Burmese service while 24 more went to two Indian railways (see Locobase 4275).

[link] notes that these had "...a wider firebox and other improvements to handle low-grade coal." As with many of these colonial locomotives, the Vulcans had Belpaire fireboxes.

NB: Tube length is an estimate based on the calculation of tube surface area by subtracting reported firebox heating surface from reported total evaporative heating surface
