The Hall's Bay Railway was the first railway in Newfoundland constructed by Sir Robert Gillespie Reid, who completed the line in 1893. After extending the line west to Port-au-Basque, Reid renamed the system Newfoundland Northern & Western in 1894. Ultimately, the NN&W evolved into the Reid Newfoundland group in 1898.
