Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class unknown (Locobase 14664)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Vol 60, pp. 405. Works number was 54241 in January 1921.

Baldwin had supplied a saddle tank to the Dah Sing Cotton & Spinning Company to run on their 60 cm gauge track (Locobase 14620). When the Celebes Railway needed a small tank for their 40 km (25 mile) line to Takalar, Eddystone took the design, placed it on axles to accommodate a gauge almost twice as wide, and enlarged the water tank. The engine needed to ride lightly as the rails weighed only 24 lb/yard (12 kg/metre). Maximum grades reached 3% and curve radii were as tight as 70 feet (21.3 metres).

Little of the planned network of railways in the Celebes was completed before the Great Depression and war stopped all building.

NB: The Celebes lie on the eastern side of the Makassar Strait; the island of Borneo is on the western side. The city of Makassar is 1,162 miles (1,871 km) east of Singapore.
