Chilean State 0-6-2 Locomotives in Chile

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 283 (Locobase 9759)

Data from Angus Sinclair, Railway and Locomotive Engineering, May 1902, p. 202; and DeGolyer, Volume 24, p.243. (Thanks to Pablo Moraga for his 10 May 2022 email providing the definition of PWD.) Works numbers were 20211-20213 in March 1902.

These radial tanks were surprisingly small for the broad-gauge railway on which they ran. The Chilean State supplied them to the Public Works Department or PWD (in Spanish, DOP for Direccion de Obras Publicas) to support construction of new railways, according to Pablo Moraga. Once construction ended, they returned to the CSR.

Class Tipo-a (Locobase 21020)

Data from "Locomotora Tipo-a C1-Arn Jung Locomotivefabrik- Plano 8914" from scans supplied by by Señor Raul Moroni of Santiago, archived on [link], last accessed 1 May 2022. See also Martin Coombs, "Chilean Steam Locomotive List - Parte 4" found at Works numbers were 2034 in 1913 (5025) and 4639-4641 in 1929.

These small radial tanks came in two batches separated by more than a decade. The first three had squared side tank fronts and the overall wheelbase as shown. The last three showed rounded fronts on the tanks and 100 mm (4.2") longer engine wheelbases added to the firebox and cab behind the last driver.

Coombs shows several earlier Jung-built 0-6-2Ts with identical power dimensions, of which the first two (works numbers 1306-1307) almost immediately tranferred to Military railway. The first name--Presidente Montt--was given to the slightly later works number--1350--bearing road number 1. Road 2 went to the 1351, which was named Vicente Mendez Urrejola.

Over several decades, the Tipo a described here underwent tank modifications, but remained essentially unchanged. All remained in service into the 1950s.
