As originally conceived in 1888, this railway would link a section of downtown Santiago with the soon-famous Concha y Toro vineyards in Pirque; it opened in 1893. One of the early locomotives on the line was this unassuming Mogul named for the railway.
Two years after this wine railway began service, its new owners adopted much more ambitious plans. See Locobase 13873.

The original intent of this railway's construction is briefly described in Locobase 13872. When Francisco Subercaseaux and his sister and widow of Don Melchor Concha y Toro, Emiliana Subercaseaux de Concha, bought the road in 1895, their dream was to connect Santiago with Argentina using a route along the Rio Maipo.
Instead, the line extended only to Puente Alto, about 22 km from the Estacion de Pirque in Santiago, a building famed for its size and luxurious appointments as befitting the destination of those Argentine passengers that would never arrive.
The Moguls shown here joined the 2 (which had a lower boiler pressure, but was otherwise similar) in supporting Ll del M during its steam-driven years. The first was named for the vineyard's founder; it was delivered with a boiler pressure set to 180 psi. The specs were undemanding: a maximum grade of 1 1/4%, curves with radii as tight as 150 metres (492 ft), and a speed of 20 km/h (13 mph).
The second was named for Francisco's father and the third for his niece (or grandniece) Magdalena Vicu'a.
